Reasoning vs. Church
Thought and reasoning have always been challenged by the church. Throughout history church has denied all class of reasoning and scientific explanations what so ever. Church, has always had a contrary point of view towards the sciences and the logical explanations of things. They have always based their point of view in what the bible says.
"The lieutenant said in a tone of fury: 'Well, you're going to be a martyr—you've got that satisfaction.'
'Oh, no. Martyrs are not like me. They don't think all the time—if I had drunk more brandy I shouldn't be so afraid.' Pg. 196.
In this passage the priest lets the reader know how he and the church think about thought and people who think. He tells he is not like the people who think, he is from the church, therefore he does not think and he is not like all other martyrs. Throughout the book, the priest lets us know his point of view in an implicit way. However, most of the decisions he makes are because of his toughts.
